Fandom is a Way of Life
By: , London
Christel Dee is a fan. She has been to various conventions from the age of 14, but recently she has found herself becoming detached from the ‘fandom’ world.
She now wants to investigate what it means to be a fan and how people become so absorbed in a subject and for what reasons?
A replacement?
An addiction?
An escape?
The film follows three young fans as they visit various conventions. Along the way we will uncover elements of their lives that provide answers to their extreme fandom.
And maybe Christel will have a clearer understanding as to why she became immersed in the world of fandom.

A few words from Christel Dee:
First I would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who have pledged so far. Without you, this film wouldnt be possible!
So heres a little bit about myself and why I want to make this film…
I went to my first convention when I was about 14. I was always into things like Pokemon as a child and when my best friend from primary school invited me it seemed like a good idea to go. I thought it was amazing; the exciting merchandise, all the people dressed up. It kick started a massive interest in anime and manga and later sci-fi. I became completely immersed in the stories and began building extensive collections and attending the conventions dressed as my favourite characters. I was hooked. Everything revolved around anime, manga and Doctor Who. It became an obsession.
The costuming aspect, known as cosplay, later developed into a love for making costumes. I entered these into various competitions, winning awards and features on various websites and in magazines. I began to focus more on the creative aspect and less about the characters themselves (although I always chose characters I particularly liked).
However when I went to University and began to study film and television from a critical perspective, I found that the connection and attachment I once felt for anime, manga and shows such as Doctor Who disappeared as I became aware of the film making process and industry practices. I also had to turn my attention to other areas of my life e.g. moving out, studying, career etc which meant I had less time to indulge in my fandoms. I still attend conventions however, but now make videos at the events for my YouTube Channel.
So now as a filmmaker, I want to find out more about the world I’ve been part of for so long. I want to look at fandom in more detail; for what reasons do people become so attached to a subject and to what extremes? How does it manifest itself in everyday life and in some cases, take control of it? And perhaps by hearing other peoples stories, I will have a clearer understanding as to why I became so immersed in the world of fandom.
