Bring Brohoof Back

By: Verdana   London

Brohoof was shut down by an internet attacker, but together we are stronger!

Brohoof.com is a Minecraft server where we recreate Equestria, the world of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. You can visit our web site here:

http://www.brohoof.com/

There are a few other servers around now that serve the same audience, but Brohoof is one of the oldest and has one of the largest (and we think best!) communities. We build things from the show as accurately as we can, play together, and organise fun events. Anyone can join the server, and it is completely free to play.

Unfortunately, Brohoof is not without enemies, usually people who dislike the fan community or who have been banned from the server. In the past, the attacks on Brohoof were brief, the culprits got bored and moved on, and we brought the server back. However, towards the end of October 2012, Brohoof came under sustained distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack which showed no sign of stopping.

DDoS attacks use a flood of data traffic from many computers to attack a single server, in this case the Brohoof Minecraft server. The incoming volume of traffic is so heavy that the server cannot serve its legitimate users. In the case of the DDoS attacks on Brohoof, the sizes of the attacks were so large that other customers of our hosting provider were affected, so we were sadly forced to close the server.

Now, together, we can bring Brohoof back.

We cannot stop the DDoS attacks, but there are specialist hosting providers who have such a large network capacity that they can ignore most of these attacks completely, and keep our server running. This protection is not cheap, which is why we've started this project to fund it. Our goal is to raise enough money here to bring the Brohoof Minecraft server back at a new hosting provider for a minimum of 6 months, with full DDoS protection. Once the server is back we'll set up a way on which you can contribute to keep Brohoof running.

How will we spend the money?

If you make a pledge to fund this project but we don't raise the full amount we need, your pledge will be refunded, and Brohoof won't come back until the attacker has been stopped.

If we meet our target, we will use your pledge to bring the Brohoof Minecraft server back. If we go significantly over our funding target then we’ll run the server for longer than 6 months, as long as the pledge money lasts. If we raise over £2250 we will bring Brohoof back on an even faster host with completely bulletproof DDoS protection and even less network latency (lag).

Every penny of the money raised here today (after expenses) will be spent keeping the Brohoof Minecraft server running and protected. If the server has to close for any reason, and we still have pledge money left in our account, we will use this to provide the backups on the web to everyone for as long as possible.

Please make a pledge today to bring Brohoof back, receive exclusive Brohoof rewards, and show the haters that they can't hurt us. Friends stick together!

* In-game rewards that relate to your ability to play on the server are subject to your agreement to abide by the rules of the brohoof.com Minecraft server which may be read here:
http://www.brohoof.com/forums/forum-1/announcement-6-server-info-please-read/
If you violate these rules you may be banned from the server and will no longer have access to any in-game rewards. Backing this project does not constitute a contract for brohoof.com to provide you with an ongoing service, nor does it provide immunity from the server rules.

If you have already been banned from the server you will not be able to receive any of the in-game rewards, sorry.

If you wish to remain anonymous or do not wish to make use of the in-game rewards you may optionally choose to forfeit in-game rewards once the project is funded. This is entirely up to you.

In-game rewards will be delivered to each backer on a “reasonable best efforts” basis once the server has been relaunched, please remember our admins are all volunteers, and try to be patient.

Update 2

You did it! You’ve given Brohoof the best possible home when we come back, and it all happened in less than a week since we started accepting pledges. Thank you all so much, you made my dream come true.

We heard there were some people who wanted the rewards that were sold out, so Hazzat and Philly have generously offered one more each of their £150 pledges. Hazzat has another of the vinyl pony figurines, and Philly will make another special hand-painted Brohoof T-shirt just for you. If you missed out the first time, those pledges are back on offer.

If you already contributed, and want to do so again, you can do that! At the end I’ll add up what people sent us to make sure you get the level of reward that corresponds to your total pledges. I can’t do this with the £150 pledges because they are limited in number, but I’ll make sure it happens for everything up to that.

The admins have already started working behind the scenes to get everything ready for you when we come back. The plan right now is to place the order for the new hosting as soon as I receive the money from the PleaseFund.Us campaign, which means Brohoof should be BACK around the middle of December.

You can keep contributing for as long as we run the campaign, and any extra money will keep the server running for longer. We’ll run until the middle of June 2013 (6 whole months of pony fun!) from what you’ve pledged so far. If you want to keep us going longer, you know what to do!

Update 1

Wow, after only one day we’ve reached the first target! Thank you all so much for your support, it means the world to me.

The campaign will not close now we’ve reached our first target. I want to keep it running for as long as people want to keep contributing, probably for the full 21 days. By raising more money here we keep the server running for longer. If we raise enough, we can afford an even better hosting plan (that’s the target of £2250 I mentioned in the text). You’ll continue to be able to pledge for the whole period the campaign is running, and of course you will receive the rewards if you pledge during this period.

As far as receiving the rewards is concerned, once the campaign closes PleaseFund.Us will pass on your contact information to me, and I’ll be in touch to ask you for your Minecraft name (or shipping address if needed) so I have a complete list of who needs to get what. So don’t worry about that, you don’t need to give me your Minecraft name at this point.

Now’s the time to shoot for that higher goal to give Brohoof the best possible home when we come back. You can help by getting the word out on your Facebooks, Twitters and Tumblrs. Whatever way you have to show the broader community what’s happening here. Brohoof is a server for everyone, so lets make some new friends!
